Marriage Project head to speak at bar dinner

Cleveland-The Ohio Human Rights Bar Association will hold its annual meeting and dinner in Cleveland on Saturday, May 3. This is the first time the event will be held in Cleveland.

The annual meeting, which is open to all OHRBA members, will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Glidden House, 1901 Ford Drive, across the street from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

OHRBA is the only statewide bar association dedicated to providing a forum for lesbian and gay legal issues in Ohio.

At the annual meeting, members will elect trustees and hear a short report about all of OHRBA's activities in 1996 and plans for 1997. After that, between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., the association will present a continuing legal education, or CLE, program on topics including the employment rights of gays, lesbian and bisexual employers and employees; ethical considerations in representing same sex couples; Social Security and the gay, lesbian or bisexual client; and substance abuse.

The legal education program is certified by the Ohio Supreme Court, and, as always, is presented free of charge. Interested members of the public are welcome to attend. The CLE program will take place at the Glidden House.

Following the CLE program, the members of the board of trustees will be holding a meeting to elect officers for calendar year 1997-98 and discuss other business. Members of OHRBA are welcome to attend the board meeting.

At 6:30 p.m., OHRBA's annual dinner will begin. The annual dinner will take place across the street across the street from the Glidden House at Cleveland Bo-

tanical Gardens, 11030 East Boulevard. The dinner will feature, for the first time, a Chinese "family style" meal by Pearl of the Orient, with each table being provided with a chicken dish, a seafood dish and several vegetarian dishes.

OHRBA is especially pleased that Evan Wolfson, senior staff attorney and director of the Marriage Project for the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, and who is acting as lead attorney in the Hawaii marriage case, will be the keynote speaker at the annual dinner.

Cost of the annual meeting, including the dinner and CLE program is $45. Members attending the annual meeting and dinner will also be given the opportunity to pay their 1997 OHRBA dues at a discounted rate $35 instead of the usual $40, if they renew their membership at that time.

OHRBA has reserved a limited block of rooms at the Glidden House at a discounted rate. To make reservations and to get directions to the Glidden House, call 216231-8900. To receive the discounted rate, mention you will be attending OHRBA annual meeting and dinner.

To make reservations for the annual meeting and dinner or to become a member of OHRBA, please contact Timothy J. Downing, Esq., President, at 216-621-8400 or by email at tdowning@ulmer.com. You may also call OHRBA's Hotline at 614265-7530, write us 1487 West Fifth Avenue, Suite 247, Columbus, Ohio 43212 or by e-mail at info@ohrba.org. Also, check out our Web page at www.ohrba.org.

While OHRBA's annual dinner is specifically directed toward lawyers and law students, all members of the public are welcome to attend. Therefore, we hope to see you on May 3.

Columbus-Central Ohio residents will lace up their Air Jordans, Nikes and baby Weeboks for the third annual AIDSWalk Columbus, a community pledge walk to raise $150,000 in critical funding to support HIV and AIDS services and education.

Hosted by ten central Ohio service organizations, AIDSWalk Columbus will focus attention on the impact of AIDS in our community while raising money to support much needed programs and services provided by each group. Proceeds from the walk will aid nearly 2,500 clients living with HIV, and will reach more than 100,000 through education programs.

At 2 pm on Sunday May 4, walkers will meet downtown at Bicentennial Park and travel along High Street, past Columbus City Center, through downtown and the Short North area. The walkers will return along Neil, Park and Front Streets through Victorian Village and past Goodale Park. The route is 4.5 miles. There is a 2-mile option available.

Organizers hope to attract 1,600 walkers for this annual event. Interested walkers can call the AIDSWalk Columbus Information Line at 614-447-5050 or visit

Our

web site at www.aidswalkcolumbus.org for more information or to obtain pledge forms. Walkers can preregister or register on the day of the walk, starting at 11:30 at Bicentennial Park.

AIDSWalk Columbus benefiting agencies are the AIDS Service Connection, the

Bernice Troy Home, Camp Sunrise, Columbus AIDS Task Force, Interfaith Retreats, Metropolitan Residential Services, Ohio AIDS Coalition, Pater-Noster House, Positive Vision Theater and Project Open Hand-Columbus.

With the support from AIDSWalk Columbus, these organizations will continue to provide case management, advocacy training, food delivery, operate the Ohio AIDS Hotline, offer housing, provide emotional and psychological support and offer retreats to children affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS.

AIDS is an epidemic that continues to devastate the lives of women, children and men throughout central Ohio. AIDS is now the leading cause of death for Americans age 25-44. Since 1981 over 1,600 women, men and children have died of AIDS in central Ohio. Experts estimate the number of people in Franklin County living with HIV to be over 5,000.

"Due to new medications and treatments for people living with HIV developed over the last two years, the great news is people with this virus will live much longer," said Jose Rodriguez, general co-chair of AIDSWalk Columbus. "For this reason, AIDS services agencies will be servicing clients for much longer periods. We must make certain that funding allow these services to continue. This is a great opportunity to assure this, and celebrate the hope for the future."
